The Expression Orchestra
The Expression Orchestra is an ensemble of multi-sensory instruments designed to increase access to rich musical expression, developed over several distinct phases of research and development.
In the first phase of development funded by the Arts Council of Wales we established the core purpose of The Expression Orchestra through our Access-First Design philosophy.
The second phase, supported by Anthem's Atsain Fund, evolved early prototypes into non-screen-based physical instruments which were refined through public playtesting.
The third phase delivered through MyWorld's Sandbox programme at the Pervasive Media Studio in Bristol, focused on expanding the expressive capabilities of the instruments using AI and machine learning. This culminated in the first three major public presentations of The Expression Orchestra, where thousands of people experienced the work as a complete installation for the first time since conception of The Expression Orchestra.
The most recent phase was supported by the Media Cymru Development Fund, and concentrated on making our proven prototype instruments internationally deployable.
